The paper production process is a precise collaboration between natural endowments and human craftsmanship, transforming loose plant fibers into a structured, information-carrying channel. It is not a single, instantaneous action, but rather a series of interconnected steps, each laying the foundation for the paper's texture, performance, and lifespan.

The process begins with raw material preparation. Wood pulp, typically made from coniferous and broadleaf wood, is debarked, sliced, and fed into a digester where chemical solutions break down lignin, separating pure cellulose. Non-wood pulps such as bamboo, hemp, and straw require crushing followed by a degumming process. The temperature, time, and chemical ratios at this stage directly affect fiber length and purity, thus determining the strength and fineness of the finished paper. Next comes pulping and purification, where screening, slag removal, and bleaching processes remove impurities and pigments, resulting in a light-colored pulp liquor with uniform fibers.

The following step is batching and preparation. According to product requirements, the pulp is mixed with fillers, sizing agents, dyes, and other auxiliary materials in precise proportions, and water is added to adjust the concentration. Fillers improve smoothness and whiteness, while sizing agents enhance water resistance, preventing ink penetration and diffusion. The mixing process requires precise control of stirring intensity and time to ensure uniform distribution of components and avoid localized performance deviations.

The core of forming is wire dewatering. The prepared slurry is evenly poured onto a high-speed moving forming wire, where water is rapidly filtered out under gravity and vacuum suction, and fibers intertwine on the wire surface to form a wet paper web. At this stage, the wet paper layer still contains a large amount of moisture and needs further compression in the press section. Mechanical pressure is used to squeeze out residual water, increasing fiber bonding tightness and reducing drying energy consumption.

Drying gives the paper its final shape and strength. The wet paper web passes through a series of heated drying cylinders, where moisture gradually evaporates, and hydrogen bonding between fibers is strengthened, making the paper stiff and dimensionally stable. Drying temperature and speed must be precisely controlled; too fast a speed can cause curling or cracking, while too slow a speed reduces efficiency. Subsequently, it enters calendering or surface treatment, using high-temperature, high-pressure rollers to improve smoothness and gloss, or adding coatings in specific processes to meet the special needs of printing and writing.

The final slitting and inspection process cuts the raw paper into finished product specifications, and samples are randomly inspected according to indicators such as thickness, whiteness, and strength to ensure compliance with intended use standards. The entire process is interconnected, from fiber disintegration to paper shaping, requiring both precise equipment control and the keen understanding of subtle changes through experience.
